Causes of Snoring

There may be all sorts of subtle causes of snoring, but you dig into them, we should stress out that in every cases snoring results from ‘any narrowing or blockage in the airways’ between the nose and the throat. This usually happens when the muscles in the throat relax more than they should during sleep. The snoring sounds result from the air hitting the soft palate and the uvula, causing vibrations through friction. This is the basic mechanism of snoring.

Common causes of snoring

  • Obstruction of the nasal airways! It appears when you have a cold, you suffer from sinusitis or allergies. You can’t breathe through the nose, you inhale through the mouth which requires more force, and thus, snoring appears. The treatment is specific here aiming to nasal decongest the nose first and foremost.
  • Old age! With aging, the muscles in the throat become more lax, and you end up snoring. In fact, the number of snorers is higher among senior adults.
  • Anatomical abnormalities of the mouth or throat! Inflamed tonsils and adenoids, deviated nasal septum or nasal polyps are frequent causes of snoring. In many cases the solution is surgical, but only the doctor can recommend the right course of treatment.
  • Alcohol consume before bedtime leads to drowsiness and muscle relaxation. When the muscles in the throat relax, the airways get narrower which encourages snoring.
  • Sedatives and smoking! Sedatives have a similar impact as alcohol, although more powerful, thus favoring snoring. Smoking on the other hand leads to the congestion of nose and lungs with long term risks for your health.
  • Obesity! The extra fatty tissues around the neck obstruct the normal airflow through the throat. Weight loss is one of the common recommendations of doctors when it comes to treating snoring by natural means.
  • An incorrect sleep position is often the culprit. When the internal airways are not held in the correct position, the obstruction that appears locally promotes snoring.
  • Sleep apnea is among the most severe causes of snoring. It is characterized by short periods of time (around ten seconds) during which the sufferer stops breathing. This causes the oxygen blood level to drop alarmingly creating the favoring circumstances for stroke or hypertension. With sleep apnea the tissues in the throat collapse which increases snoring.
